ABSTRACT: Introduction: Exposure to solvents is ubiquitous in modern industry and the workers are commonly exposed to mixtures of solvents. Aim & objectives: This study aims to assess the effect of prolonged occupational exposure to organic solvent mixtures on peripheral nerve conduction parameters of workers employed in automotive spray paint industry by using nerve conduction studies. Material & Methods: The recordings were done in a standard way using Medelec Synergy EMG and EP systems. The exposed group consisted of 100 workers professionally exposed to chemical noxae, while the control group also consisted of 100 workers with no contact with such noxae at their workplace, working/living in the same area, matched for age, height and working conditions. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) of ulnar, median, common peroneal, tibial and sural nerves were performed in both groups. The sensory nerve conduction velocity and sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) of median, ulnar and sural nerves showed significant decline in exposed workers in comparison to the control group. Similarly, there was a significant increase in minimum F-wave latency and a significant decline in motor nerve conduction velocity and compound muscle action potential (CMAP) of the median, ulnar, common peroneal and tibial nerves of the exposed workers in terms of increasing duration of exposure. Conclusion: It is concluded that the present study suggests peripheral neurodegeneration in workers of paint and lacquer industry.

Assessment of Acquired Color Vision Impairment among the Workers Exposed to Mixed Organic Solvents in an Automobile Manufacturing Company
Background and Objectives: Solvents are widely used in industries. Occupational exposure to organic solvents can lead to dysfunction of the nervous system. Since color-vision impairment can be a sensitive and early marker of neurotoxic damage, this study was designed to determine the influence of chronic occupational exposure to organic solvent mixtures on color vision. Materials and Methods: ...
متن کاملEffect of Exposure to a Mixture of Organic Solvents on Hearing Thresholds in Petrochemical Industry Workers
Introduction: Hearing loss is one of the most common occupational diseases. In most workplaces, workers are exposed to noise and solvents simultaneously, so the potential risk of hearing loss due to solvents may be attributed to noise. In this study we aimed to assess the effect of exposure to mixed aromatic solvents on hearing in the absence of exposure to hazardous noise. Materials and Met...

Background and Aim: Considering the acute and chronic effects of organic solvents to which vehicle painters are exposed for long periods of time, their evaluation and control is crucial for protection of health of the employees. This study aimed to find the most influential factors on exposure to, and spreading pollution with, benzene, toluene, xylem, and etylebenzene (BTEX) in order to be abl...

Introduction: Based on the results of some studies, concurrent exposure to organic solvents and noise in industrial areas can accelerate the amount of hearing loss. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of concurrent exposure to organic solvents and noise on high frequency hearing loss. Method: This was a cross-sectional analytic study conducted on 1029 tire manufacturing company wo...
متن کاملOxidative stress indices in rats’ lung tissues following simultaneous exposure to noise and styrene
Background: Simultaneous exposure to noise and organic solvents such as styrene is an indispensable part of today’s industries. Numerous studies were done related to ototoxic effects of co-exposure to noise and styrene while some evidences showed the adverse effects of such exposure on other organs. In this study, we aimed to assess the subacute effects of combined exposure to noise and s...
